WHAT TO DO AFTER HAVING THE RESULT OF THE VIETNAM CRIMINAL RECORD TYPE 2?

Receiving your Vietnam Criminal Record Certificate Type 2 is an important milestone — but your process doesn’t end there if you intend to use it overseas. To ensure it is legally valid and accepted abroad, follow these essential steps:

  1. Translate the Certificate: Have your certificate translated into the required language of the destination country by a certified translator. Most countries require an English translation, but double-check with the relevant authority for specific requirements.
  2. Authenticate at the Vietnam Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA): Your translated documents must then be authenticated by MOFA in Vietnam. This confirms that the signature and seal on the original certificate are genuine and valid for international use.
  3. Legalize at the Embassy or Consulate of the Destination Country: After MOFA authentication, the document set must be legalized by the Embassy or Consulate of the country where you intend to use the certificate. If you are currently abroad, check if this step can be completed at the relevant foreign mission in your country of residence.

💡 Note: Since the result is sent directly from the Ministry of Public Security to your overseas address, only a photocopy of the certificate (not the original) can be used for the legalization process. This legalized set must include the photocopy of the certificate and the certified translation.

Applying for a Vietnam Criminal Record Certificate Type 2 from abroad — especially during this transitional period under the new Ministry of Public Security regulations — may be unfamiliar or confusing for many foreigners. However, with thorough preparation and careful attention to each step, the entire process can be completed without having to return to Vietnam.
