For Experts and Technical Workers: Foreign expatriates classified as Experts or Technical Workers who have already extended their work permit once may apply for a second extension. This allows such individuals to obtain a total of three work permits, with a cumulative maximum validity of six years.
For Managers: Foreign Managers are eligible for only one work permit extension in Vietnam. If your company has already extended a work permit once, subsequent applications must follow the new issuance process with a complete set of required documents.
Flexibility for applications: Foreign workers can collaborate with their sponsoring company to extend their work permit while residing either in Vietnam or abroad, as long as the provided documents meet the standards outlined in Decree 152/2020/ND-CP and Decree 70/2023/ND-CP.

STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS TO EXTEND VIETNAM WORK PERMIT

Step 1: Job posting	Post a recruitment notice on the Employment Department's E-portal at least 15 days before submitting the demand report to hire foreign employees.	15 days
Step 2: Job Position Approval	Submit a demand explanation report to DOLISA if no suitable Vietnamese candidates are found. This step must be submitted at least 30 days before expected starting working days of the expatriate in Vietnam.	10 working days
Step 3: Submit Renewal Application	After obtaining job position approval, submit the exension application with all required documents to DOLISA. This step should be submitted at least 05 days but not exceed 45 days from the current work permit expiry date.	5 working days

WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE NEEDED FOR A WORK PERMIT EXTENSION IN VIETNAM?

Health Certificate	Medical report or health certificate: If taking in Vietnam: Required the Original Health Check result from an authorized institution in Vietnam. If taking overseas: Required the Original Legalized Health Check
Supporting Employment Documents	Includes intra-company transfer documents, or employer confirmations, depending on the case.
